General Description:

This habitat category comprises of bracken (see C1), upland species-rich ledges (see C2) and tall ruderal and non-ruderal other tall fern and fern (see C3).

C1 Bracken:

Bracken Habitat Description: Areas dominated by Pteridium aquilinum, or with scattered patches of this species.

  • C1.1 Bracken - continuous Description: - Areas dominated by Pteridium aquilinum.
  • C1.2 Bracken - scattered Description: - Scattered patches of Pteridium aquilinum.

C2 Upland species-rich ledges:

Upland Species Rich Ledges Description: This ledge vegetation contains species such as Angelica sylvestris, Filipendula ulmaria, Solidago virgaurea, Athyrium filix-femina, Trollius europaeus and Crepis paludosa. Areas supporting this habitat are nearly always too small to map and consequently must be target noted.

C3 Other tall herb and fern:

Other tall-herb and fern Habitat Description: This category comprises of tall ruderal vegetation (see C3.1) and non ruderal vegetation (see C3.2) excluding bracken (C1) and upland species-rich ledges (C2).

  • C3.1 Tall ruderal - Description: - This category comprises stands of tall perennial or biennial dicotyledons, usually more than 25cm high, of species such as Chamerion (Chamaenerion) angustifolium, Urtica dioica and Reynoutria japonica. Dominant species should be coded. See also ephemeral/short perennial (J1 - Miscellaneous Habitats).
  • C3.2 Non-ruderal Description: - Non-wooded stands of species such as Oreopteris limbosperma, Athyrium felix-femina, Dryopteris species or Luzula sylvatica should be included in this category.
