One of the major aspects of RECORD must be to encourage biological recording and the analysis and usage of the accumulated data. This must happen in order to ensure that future data will be available for the Cheshire region and that future recorders are developed.
One of the main ways of both finding new people and new data, and also stimulating further recording effort, is via the production of Provisional Distribution Atlases for specific species/taxon groupings. It can be guaranteed that following the production of such an atlas people will come out of the woodwork with records which prove that the species or group are to be found in places not shown on the publication’s maps, and that recording will take place such that the maps are outdated within 2 years of their publication date. It may sound odd, but this is excellent news for a Local Record Centre as it assists in filling in the gaps of knowledge about the species in our area.
It was decided, by the then Data Suppliers Advisory Group Committee (now the Recorder's Forum) on 2nd April 2001, that it was necessary to work towards the production of a Provisional Mammal Distribution Atlas for the Cheshire region. Due to the unknown quantity of the then available data, and the fact that there was only a relatively modest amount of mammal data on the RECORD database, it was felt that this should be produced as soon as is possible but that recorders should also be given time to attempt to fill known gaps via survey. As a consequence, the target for this atlas was for it to be produced within a six year period from 2001 - the target date was set for early in 2007. To see if the target was met visit the Cheshire Mammal Group (CMaG) pages.
