As part of Vale Royal's Local Agenda 21 process, the Natural Environment Round Table has proposed a Nature Conservation Strategy for Vale Royal. The overall goal of the strategy is "to bring about the effective conservation and enhancement of the natural environment in Vale Royal through partnership and pro-active working with other organisations and the public".
You can read the Vale Royal Nature Consrevation Audit by clicking here.

The authority is currently working towards this goal in many ways, all of which aim to conserve and enhance the biodiversity of the Borough and the wider region. For example, Vale Royal:

  • Designating Local Nature Reserves at Marshall's Arm in Hartford and at Helsby Quarry
  • Incorporating BAP projects wherever possible within the management of our 19 Countryside Sites
  • Offering grants for nature conservation projects in the Borough; 2006 projects included hedge laying, new hedgerow planting and wildflower meadow creation.
  • Applying for the Green Flag Award to recognise quality management of Countryside Sites. Marshall's Arm achieved the Award for the third time in 2006/7;
  • Being a partner in the ECOnet project, an international project lead by Cheshire County Council aiming to develop large scale ecological networks;
  • Supporting the work of community groups and BAP action groups in their work to conserve biodiversity;
  • Incorporating policies to conserve biodiversity into the Local Plan for the Borough;
  • Working with developers in the Borough to incorporate provision for nature conservation into new developments wherever possible.
  • Contributing to the ongoing development of the Cheshire Biological Records Centre (the rECOrd Centre);
  • Providing advice and guidance to people living and working in the Borough on nature conservation issues;
  • Being a partner in The Mersey Forest and Action Weaver Valley
