NATIONAL STAG BEETLE WORKSHOPS

The People's Trust foir Endangered Species (PTES) are running six one-day stag beetle workshops throughout May. The workshops are targeted at countryside & estate managers, park staff and tree wardens who have an interest in managing sites within the range of the greater stag beetle. Unfortunetly there is not a workshop near the Cheshire region but if anyone feels like travelling then you could go to Essex, Kent, Hampshire/Berkshire, Surrey, Sussex or Suffolk. CRAYFISH LBAP UPDATE

Two training days on surveying for white-clawed crayfish are planned for 2007. One will be for members of the Cheshire region Biodiversity Partnership but the one on Saturday 28th July is open to all. It is being run as part of the CWT Natural Know-How training programme.

The Environment Agency has provided funds for traps and survey equipment for the crayfish LBAP.

The LBAP Group aim to survey still waters, canals and meres throughout 2007.

WHITE LETTER HAIRSTREAK BAP UPDATE

The white letter hairstreak LBAP has recevied agreement for funding and this was celebrated at a launch event held on 25th November 2006, where about 300 elm trees were planted. The launch was attended by 25 volunteers plus Mike Hall MP. A planting schedule has been drawn up with BTCV which will see 1500 trees being planted each year for the next two years. It is also hoped that 1000 seedlings will be produced by the end of the project.

The Wirral MBC Barn Owl webcam has been rated as one of the Top 6 webcam sites, according to the BBC.

REGIONAL WATER VOLE PROJECT MOOTED

A bid is being submitted for funding for a three year regional water vole project which will cover Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cheshire. Fingers crossed!

NATIONAL BAP

The new national BAP targets are now on the UK BAP website. A review of which plans should be included in the national BAP is expected to report in March 2007, with new habitat targets to be included.

DEAD OTTER FOUND

A dead otter was found by the roadside in Wybunbury recently. The body has been sent for analysis. It is hoped this is a positive sign that otters are returning to Cheshire in greater numbers.

In related news, the otter video monitoring project is up and running. They have yet to see an otter but the heat-sensitive camera has been very effective in spotting cows!

SREP UPDATE

The Sandstone Ridge ECOnet Partnership project recently held a two-day open day hosted by Tarmac. 300 local people had a tour round the quarry. the SREP project has funding to support local community projects. Anyone interested should contact Mike Wellman on 01244 603195.
