CONGLETON BOROUGH COUNCIL

Congleton Borough Council logo

Congleton Borough Council is committed to the principles of sustainability and seeks to protect and enhance the abundance and diversity of the Borough's wildlife and its habitats. The Council has undertaken an audit of habitats, based on a Phase 1 survey, and in 2000 it adopted a Nature Conservation Strategy.

The Borough contains a wide variety of wildlife habitats which support many species. Within a hierarchy of sites there are:

12 nationally recognised Sites of Special Scientific Interest ( S.S.S.I.s), one of which is also internationally recognised.
73 sites included in the Cheshire Register of Sites of Biological Importance (SBI's).
1 Local Nature Reserve
Various sites with designations of local value such as the Sandbach Wildlife Corridor

Nature conservation issues feature throughout many areas of the Council's work. Examples include:

Planning policies in the adopted Local Plan and the Local Plan First Review specifically relating to wildlife habitats and species.
Management & enhancement of wildlife and countryside sites in Council ownership such as Cranberry Moss Local Nature Reserve in Alsager and Brereton Heath Country Park.
Promotion of wildlife issues through the Countryside Ranger Service Local Agenda 21, the Congleton State of the Environment Report and the Community Planning process.
