Areas of Special Landscape Value
Cheshire has a wealth of diverse landscapes within its borders. The woodland river valleys and sandstone hills, the meres and the old parklands each contribute in great measure to the character of the county.
The finest of these areas - around one hundred square miles of countryside - are designated by the County Council as being of 'special county value for landscape'. It is of paramount importance that these areas are protected from unsympathetic development - valuable as they are for wildlife and recreation - so that they remain for future generations to enjoy.
What is the Special Landscapes Project?
In order to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of such landscapes, a partnership has been established between a number of bodies concerned with the Cheshire countryside.
THE CHESHIRE SPECIAL LANDSCAPES PROJECT is managed by BTCV and sponsored jointly by Cheshire County Council, private sector sponsors and local authorities.
The project aims to involve the people of Cheshire in caring for their local landscapes and natural environment:
tree and hedge planting | rebuilding drystone walls |
pond management | regenerating undermanaged woodlands |
creating access opportunities | conserving old meadowlands |
BTCV is a registered charity with many years of experience in practical conservation work of this nature. It is able to combine people, tools and equipment and careful organisation into a unique work force focusing its energies on the needs of the countryside.
Objectives
· To encourage measures which will conserve and protect existing landscape features and wildlife habitats on private and publicly owned land.
· To encourage the establishment of new landscape features on private and publicly owned land.
· To promote wider appreciation of the need to take action to conserve landscape and wildlife amongst landowners, public bodies and local communities.
· To ensure that those who carry out conservation measures can receive advice and assistance from statutory bodies.
· To help landowners maintain existing rights of way by advice and small scale management tasks such as footpath improvement.
Special Landscapes and you
The project plays a major role throughout the Areas of Special County Value for Landscape in enabling local communities to take action to enhance the wildlife and landscape of their immediate environment.
Farmers and landowners within these areas can gain from the project in matters relating to conservation management of their land. Help and advice can be provided on:
· Setting up conservation management plans
· Availability of grants
· Provision of training in countryside skills
· Implementation of plans by conservation volunteers and other organisations
Community groups, schools and Parish Councils can benefit greatly by making contact with the project. Advice on grants and practical help with schemes as diverse as creating school nature areas to laying a churchyard hedge is readily available.
