ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Gardening contributes to our enjoyment and appreciation of nature, the environment, biodiversity and wildlife. Gardeners in general have great concern for the natural environment, no group is more involved with interactions between plants, animals and insects, and gardeners have many opportunities to create and protect habitats for wildlife and wild flowers.

From its foundation in 1804, the Royal Horticultural Society has grown to be the world's leading horticultural organisation, demonstrating excellence in horticulture and promoting gardening. We at the Society continue our commitment to gardeners through inspirational flower shows, gardens, and over 1,000 lectures and demonstrations making sure they are easy to access throughout the UK.

Our four flagship gardens - Wisley in Surrey, Rosemoor in Devon, Hyde Hall in Essex and Harlow Carr in North Yorkshire - not only provide year-round interest but also demonstrate the best gardening practices, new techniques and exciting new plants to try in your own garden.

To promote gardening even more widely the RHS has joined forces with over 80 gardens in the UK and 20 in Europe to offer free access to RHS members.

The Society's best-known venture is organising the world famous Chelsea Flower Show, but behind the scenes vital work by RHS botanists, entomologists, plant pathologists, plant physiologists, soil scientists and general horticultural advisers ensure that the best and most up-to-date advice is available for all.

Apart from Chelsea, the Society also organises two other superb Garden Shows - at Hampton Court Palace and Tatton Park in Cheshire.

The RHS is also committed to handing down the benefits of 200 years of gardening expertise to the next generation of gardeners. Students from all over the world apply for positions on the one- and two-year courses at the RHS Garden Wisley, and several thousand amateur and professional gardeners sit RHS examinations each year to gain nationally recognised qualifications.

As a charity, the bulk of the Society's funding comes from its membership, which now totals in excess of 320,000. We rely greatly on the support our members give us to fulfil our aim to protect Britain's gardening heritage and help gardeners everywhere.
