August this year will be ‘Meres and Mosses Month’ as Cheshire and Shropshire Wildlife Trusts jointly launch the Great Meres and Mosses Festival to celebrate a unique part of our natural heritage. Thanks to ancient glacial meltwater, Cheshire and Shropshire host a series of meres and mosses, that are regarded as internationally important habitats – as recognised by the Network of European Wetlands.
To celebrate this fact, and raise general awareness and appreciation about the natural value of these habitats, the two Trusts have created a programme of events to take place throughout August. During Meres and Mosses Month you can enjoy:
Meres and Mosses Month, and the Great Meres and Mosses Festival is part-funded by the European Agricultural Guidance Fund (EAGGF) of the EU, and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) through the Northern Marches–Leader+ programme.
It is hoped the festival will become an annual event as residents and businesses across the two counties realise the significance and privilege of living in ‘Meres and Mosses Country’.
