Objective

Halt and reverse the current decline in song thrush numbers

Current Status

Numbers of this species were at a stable level until the mid 1970's after which they declined steadily with an estimated reduction nationally of 73% in farmland, and 49% in woodland habitats. National trend analysis in 'The State of the UK's Birds 2000' survey (RSPB, WWT, BTO) shows a short term decline of 5% and a long term decline of 59%. In 1982 records for south-east Cheshire showed a decrease of 32% of known territories, but this followed a very cold winter. The actual status of the bird in Cheshire is unknown at present but it seems to be very low.

Listed on the RSPB Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern in the United Kingdom, Channel Isles and the Isle of Man (1996). Protected under the EC Birds Directive; the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981, and the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order, 1985.

The song thrush was introduced to the Countdown programme in 1997. To date a BAP Action Group is yet to be formed and individuals or groups interested in being part of the pending action for 2002 are welcome.

Records of song thrush on the rECOrd database as at 01/12/00 (red = post 1980, black = pre 1980):
