UNITED UTILITIES

We are committed to protecting and enhancing biodiversity.

We reviewed our approach to biodiversity in 2008. Our commitments are:

  • To comply with all national and international biodiversity legislation and plans either directly or through our contractors;
  • Integrate the management of biodiversity into appropriate business policies and processes, including day to day operations;
  • To protect biodiversity and enhance it where possible on all land owned by the business;
  • To communicate, share and embed where possible best practise in biodiversity across UU employees, partners and contractors; and
  • To work with external partners and stakeholders to actively influence the development of policy and future developments affecting biodiversity.
We have a long history of working to protect and enhance biodiversity on the catchment land we own. We are now working to extend our direct biodiversity management activities to cover our operational sites (for example, water and wastewater treatment sites). Additionally, assessment of local wildlife forms an integral part of our capital project planning process. We work together with many local and national wildlife and environmental organisations on biodiversity projects and taking advice on the managment of protected sites on our land.

We are also contributing to the region's biodiversity aims through our ongoing commitment to improving the natural environment. Our programmes to reduce waste and resource use, energy use and carbon emissions work alongside our multi-billion pound investment programme to improve the qulaity of our landholdings and the aquatic environment. For example, our investmnet since 1990 in improving wastewater treatmnet has resulted in the best river quality since the industrial revolution.
