GROUNDWORK CHESHIRE
Groundwork is a leading environmental regeneration organisation working in partnership for the benefit of local people, local business and the local environment. Our purpose is 'to build sustainable communities through joint environmental action'.
Since 1983 Groundwork Cheshire has been working in partnership
to improve the local environment, the lives of local people and the
profitability of local business. Groundwork Cheshire is part of
a federation of nearly 50 Groundwork Trusts in England, Wales and Northern
Ireland, each working to meet the needs of local people. Groundwork Trusts are
registered charities and each is a partnership between the public, private and
voluntary sectors.
Our activities are divided into five programme areas:

LAND
Groundwork's Land programme creates public open space and green corridors throughout Cheshire. We work with local communities to transform derelict and neglected land into community gardens, wildlife areas, cycle and pathways. This includes development of major recreational facilities on former industrial land and the creation of new off-road cycleways as part of the Greenways Programme.
COMMUNITIES
Groundwork seeks to help local communities tackle issues relevant to them, building on local skills and strengths. We are committed to helping people improve the appearance of their community and develop partnerships. An important part of the work is looking at the longer-term strategy for the area, and how to sustain the improvements and community involve
EDUCATION
Groundwork Involves children in projects that help them value their local
environment and the role they can play to make it better.
Our Schools programme, with its aim of "developing tomorrow's decision
makers" is one of the most important of Groundwork's areas of activity,
helping to create a sustainable future for us all.
YOUTH
Groundwork is committed to involving young people in a range of projects designed to bring them into contact with other sections of the community. The engagement of young people in decision making, giving them a voice in and responsibility for their community, is an ambitious aim. In this way Groundwork can help make a valuable contribution to tackling some elements of social exclusion in Cheshire.
BUSINESS
A real issue for businesses is the impact they have upon the environment.
Groundwork seeks to help companies in Cheshire meet the challenges and
exploit the opportunities that sustainable development presents.
Groundwork's Environmental Business Services (EBS) is focused on
increasing business competitiveness through improving environmental
performance. It does this through a number of initiatives, outlined below:
- A confidential telephone helpline
- A bi-monthly business bulletin
- A Green Start (Environmental) review
- A Search-and-Send service
- Provision of information sheets
- ISO 14001 support
- Environmental management training
- Climate Change Levy reviews
